'Death Wish' Origin

Aaron Dessner has revealed that the studio version of Gracie Abrams' "Death Wish" predates the live piano version by several months. The track was written during The Secret of Us deluxe sessions. The live recording released during Abrams' tour is not the original; the album version is.

"The lyrics were written about a friend's ex in a bad relationship," Dessner stated. "I do not know the person's identity."

Subject of the Song

Dessner confirmed the song is not about Taylor Swift, contrary to online speculation. Abrams previously stated the song is about a friend dating a narcissist.

Songwriting Dynamic

Dessner said he and Abrams have known each other for over six years and are close, but they do not discuss the real-life subjects of songs. He considers it more effective not to ask directly. When she wrote about a friend's ex, he was not privy to the friend's identity.

Abrams' Approach on Daughter From Hell

Abrams said she tried to be less "careless" this album in terms of impact on subjects. Dessner noted the record is more introspective, with Abrams not editing lyrics out of concern for others.

Favorite Songs

Dessner named "What If It's Right?", "Humming" (co-written with Justin Vernon), and "Cold Goodbyes" as favorites, noting the latter was nearly improvised in the studio.

Album Direction

Dessner said some songs left off the album were more pop-oriented, but Abrams prioritizes artistic integrity over chart success. He believes the album's songs will reveal themselves over time.

Onstage Performances

Dessner described performing with Taylor Swift at the Eras Tour as overwhelming but safe. He joined Noah Kahan in New York after the prior night's show was canceled due to severe weather. He noted he had to adjust travel plans to attend the World Cup Final.
