AFL Player Dies After Head Injury on Cricket Pitch
A 27-year-old Australian rules football player has died after sustaining a head injury during a reserves match in Melbourne. The incident has prompted calls for a review of safety protocols regarding covered cricket pitches on multi-use community ovals.
The Incident
Nathan Fitzgerald was playing for the Epping Football Netball Club against Lalor at Lalor Reserve on Saturday, July 19, 2025. During a tackle, Fitzgerald collided heads with a teammate, then received a subsequent blow to the head from another player's knee or boot. He then fell and struck his head on a cricket pitch located in the middle of the oval.
The cricket pitch was covered with synthetic grass and sand at the time of the incident. Club officials described the surface as harder than the surrounding field.
Fitzgerald was transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital with a brain bleed. After undergoing surgery, his condition deteriorated, and he was placed on end-of-life care. The club confirmed his death on Monday, July 22.
Calls for Investigation
Epping Football Netball Club president Luke De Vincentis described the injury as a "freak accident" and called for an investigation into how cricket pitches are covered on multi-use community sporting ovals. He said the covering method poses a "significant risk" for high-velocity, high-contact sports.
The City of Whittlesea stated that the synthetic cricket wicket covering met relevant safety standards and is commonly used across Australia.
The Northern Football Netball League said umpires inspected the ground before the game and there is "no suggestion that what took place was anything other than a football accident."
Former AFL coach Mick Malthouse stated the incident was "simply horrible." He added the Victorian coroner would likely need to determine which head knock caused the injury.
The Victorian government and the City of Whittlesea have been contacted for comment but had not responded as of the time of reporting.

Most community sporting ovals are managed by local councils. Hard cricket pitches are typically covered with synthetic grass and sand during the winter sports off-season.
Fitzgerald worked as a maths and science teacher at Mernda Central P-12 College since 2023. The school expressed condolences and offered wellbeing services to students and staff.
An online fundraiser organized by the club had raised over $70,000 by July 21.
