Dynamic Biomarker Links Fat Gain and Loss to Metabolic Health

A new study published in Metabolism reveals that endotrophin—a protein fragment released during adipose tissue expansion and remodeling—closely tracks changes in body fat mass.

The research, involving 73 healthy adults from two distinct clinical studies, was led by scientists from LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Touchstone Diabetes Center at UT Southwestern, and the Texas Therapeutics Institute at UT Health Science Center at Houston.

Study Methodology and Findings

The team analyzed data from two separate clinical trials:

  • A six-month study examining weight-loss strategies.
  • An eight-week study of controlled overfeeding.

Participants experienced body fat changes ranging from an 11-kilogram loss to a 7-kilogram gain.

The results revealed a clear correlation: endotrophin levels increased during periods of fat gain and decreased during periods of fat loss. Furthermore, the study found evidence suggesting that endotrophin may partially mediate the relationship between increased body fat and higher total cholesterol levels.
