One worker killed, another injured in mining truck collision at BMA's Peak Downs mine
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 5:00 AM. The incident occurred when a mining truck reversed into a light vehicle at approximately 4:38 AM.
One man died at the scene. Another man, who was trapped by his lower leg in the wreckage, was freed by rescue crews and transported to Moranbah Hospital in stable condition.
Separate to the collision, an ambulance spokesperson reported that another worker at the mine suffered a serious medical episode on the same day and was airlifted to a hospital.
BMA suspended operations across all its sites for 24 hours following the incident and is cooperating with authorities, including Resources Health and Safety Queensland, which has deployed investigators and coal inspectors to the site.
Queensland Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last stated that details of the incident were still coming to hand.
The Peak Downs mine is operated by BMA, a joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development. Records from the Resources Health and Safety Queensland database indicate two previous fatalities at the mine: Peter Reynolds in 1986 and Athol Parry in 1974.
