AI Misuse Leads to Charges for Former Gold Coast Teacher
Arundel, Gold Coast — A 73-year-old former teacher at A.B. Paterson College has been charged with multiple offences following a nine-month police investigation into the alleged creation of explicit AI-generated material involving staff and students.
The Charges
The man faces four counts related to generating and possessing child exploitation material, possessing child abuse material, and misuse of a restricted computer. The charges follow a police referral in October last year, after school officials discovered explicit AI-generated content on a school-issued laptop.
School and Police Response
The school confirmed that the material was found on the teacher’s school digital account. There was no evidence that any of the material had been distributed or shared.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Aubort issued a stark warning: “The misuse of AI to create child exploitation material is a criminal offence that causes real harm to victims. Individuals using AI for such purposes should expect to be identified.”
Institutional Actions
School principal Joanne Sheehy informed parents that the staff member’s actions constituted serious misconduct. The school immediately secured the material, reported it to police, and terminated the teacher’s employment. The Queensland College of Teachers and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner have also been notified.
Next Steps
The man is due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on August 6. Investigations remain ongoing.
