A Delta Air Lines flight reported being struck by a firework while approaching Chicago Midway International Airport on the evening of July 4.

Delta Air Lines Flight 1076, an Airbus A319 traveling from Atlanta to Chicago, was descending into Chicago Midway at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, July 4, when a firework made contact with the aircraft.
According to the airline and air traffic control audio, the flight crew reported hearing and feeling a "big bang." The pilot stated the aircraft was at an altitude of 200 to 250 feet at the time. The flight crew noted they believed a mortar had gone off underneath the plane.

Despite the incident, the aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate without further issues. The flight was carrying 52 passengers and 6 crew members. No injuries were reported.
Aftermath and Investigation
Delta Air Lines stated that the matter remains under evaluation. Delta mechanics conducted a subsequent inspection and found no damage to the aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated it would investigate the incident. In audio from LiveATC.net, an air traffic controller mentioned "multiple reports" of fireworks striking aircraft and that Chicago city officials were aware. The FAA did not provide immediate information on whether additional firework-related incidents occurred that night.
The Associated Press contacted the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department. Chicago police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
