Irish Expat Shocked by Simplicity of Australian Domestic Flights
Sydney, Australia — An Irish expat living in Australia has highlighted some surprising differences between air travel in the two countries.
A Passport-Free Journey
Jamie Stapleton, who moved from Ireland to Sydney about three years ago, recently took his first domestic flight in Australia. Having only flown internationally in Europe, he was accustomed to needing his passport for every flight.
"On his first domestic flight in Australia, he forgot his passport but did not need it."
Stapleton noted that unlike international travel, Australian domestic flights do not require a passport for identification. This is a stark contrast to Ireland, where all flights are international due to the country's small size, and where Ireland remains outside the passport-free Schengen Area.
A "Game Changer" at Security
Stapleton also observed two other major differences at Australian domestic airports that he described as a "game changer."
First, passengers can pass through security checkpoints without showing a boarding pass. The pass is only required at the gate. Second, the rules regarding liquids are far more relaxed.
"Passengers are allowed to carry water bottles, shampoo, and full-size toiletries through security on domestic flights."
Habit vs. Reality
Despite the relaxed rules, Stapleton admitted he has not fully adjusted to the new system. "I still bring my passport on domestic flights just in case," he said.
However, his overall impression of his new home is overwhelmingly positive. Stapleton said he "honestly loves" living in Australia and has embraced the convenience of the country's domestic air travel system.
