Victim's Mother Describes Lasting Toll of School Shooting
Sarah Beaver, the mother of wounded student Jaxson Beaver, delivered a powerful statement through the Barrow County Assistant District Attorney, detailing the ongoing physical and emotional consequences of the attack.
"He carries the literal weight of a mass shooting inside his own flesh every single day."
Beaver reported that eight to nine pieces of metal remain embedded in her son's thigh, a permanent reminder of the violence.
Before September 4, 2024, Beaver said she believed schools were safe spaces. She described hugging her child goodbye in the morning with the assumption she would see him that afternoon.
"That version of herself no longer exists," she stated.
Beaver offered a nuanced portrayal of the shooter, Colt Gray, describing him both as a "14-year-old failed by the very people and systems that were supposed to protect him" and as the person who "stole the childhoods of others."
"Two things can be true at the same time. He was a child who was failed. He was also the person who failed countless innocent children and their families."
Beaver concluded by highlighting the new reality created by the shooting. She noted that children now know what gunfire sounds like inside their school, and parents understand the specific terror of waiting "for a phone call that may never come."
