Western Sydney Rocked by Spate of Firearm Incidents
Multiple incidents involving firearms have occurred across Western Sydney, raising concerns about community safety. Two fatal shootings in Merrylands and Lidcombe, and a separate incident where a woman was threatened with a gun in a Lidcombe car park, have prompted extensive police investigations. Authorities have already made significant progress, with two men charged in connection with one of the fatal shootings.
"Police have initiated investigations into all events, with two men charged in connection with the Lidcombe fatal shooting."
Merrylands Fatal Shooting
On a Saturday morning, a tragic discovery was made in Merrylands. A 44-year-old man was found deceased inside his unit on Newman Street in Sydney's west. A female resident located the man at approximately 6:30 AM, alerting emergency services.
Detective Acting Superintendent Tim Calman confirmed the man died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Police assessments indicate the incident was a targeted attack rather than random, suggesting a specific motive behind the killing.
Lidcombe Fatal Shooting and Assault
Monday morning saw another fatal shooting unfold in Lidcombe. A 38-year-old man, identified as Abdullah Bahsa, died following a shooting incident at a unit on Shale Street. Emergency services responded shortly after 4 AM, where they found Mr. Bahsa suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a Sydney hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
A second man present at the location also sustained injuries from an assault, though they were non-life-threatening, and he was subsequently hospitalized. Auburn Police Area Command officers swiftly established a crime scene and launched an investigation. Police have linked this shooting to organized crime.
Following their inquiries, two men, aged 21 and 22, have since been charged with murder in connection with Mr. Bahsa's death, bringing a significant development to the ongoing case.
Lidcombe Car Park Gun Threat
Just one day after the Lidcombe fatal shooting, a terrifying incident unfolded in a car park. On Tuesday at approximately 7:20 AM, a woman was threatened with a firearm in a multi-level car park on Uhrig Road in Lidcombe. The woman, who was driving her car, was approached by a white Subaru SUV. A male passenger in the SUV presented a gun before the vehicle quickly departed the scene.
While the woman was not physically injured, she was reportedly shaken by the ordeal. A significant police operation ensued, involving specialist units such as the Dog Squad and PolAir. This led to a several-hour lockdown of the area, including a nearby childcare center, as police conducted an extensive search for the alleged gunman. However, the individual was not located. Police confirmed no shots were fired during the incident.
"The woman was not physically injured but was reportedly shaken."
Superintendent Robert Toynton stated that a disagreement in the car park preceded the event. Authorities also indicated that the victim and the alleged gunman were not known to each other. Police believe two individuals were in the Subaru: a male passenger with the firearm and a potential female driver. The alleged gunman was described as having a medium build, wearing a grey hoodie and a balaclava. The Subaru was noted to have standard roof racks and cloned number plates and was sighted leaving the premises a few minutes before police arrived.
Crucially, this incident occurred one street away from where Abdullah Bahsa was fatally shot on Monday, raising questions about potential connections. Police are appealing to the public for dashcam vision to assist with their ongoing investigation into the car park incident.
