Oakley and Meta have released the Meta Vanguard, a pair of cycling glasses with a built-in camera, open-ear audio, and voice-controlled smart features. The glasses are a collaboration between Oakley (eyewear design) and Meta (technology).
A partnership between Oakley’s design legacy and Meta’s cutting-edge tech.
Design and Fit
The glasses use a wraparound shield design for stability and a close fit. Arms are thicker than standard to house electronics. Weight is slightly higher but balanced, with no reported pressure points or bounce during rides.
Lens Performance
Lenses use Prizm Road technology, which boosts contrast and improves visibility in shadows and on tarmac.
Camera and Capture
The forward-facing 12 MP camera captures photos and 3K video. It is triggered by tapping the frame or voice control. The device is not designed for always-on recording. Stabilization smooths road vibrations.
Audio and Connectivity
Open-ear speakers in the arms direct sound toward ears, allowing ambient noise awareness. Sound quality is described as clear and loud enough for riding, with wind noise at higher speeds. Calls and voice control are supported. Setup and clip transfer occur via the Meta app.
Smart Features
The glasses include AI functions: voice recording, object identification, translation, landmark recognition, and notification readouts. These require no phone interaction mid-ride.
Battery and Durability
Battery life is approximately 6–9 hours, with a charging case providing additional cycles. The device is IP67 rated for sweat and rain resistance. Lenses are not easily swappable.
Pricing
Price is approximately $789 AUD.
