Apple rolls out a lower-cost creative software bundle and slashes the price of its high-end display just weeks after launch.
Apple Creator Studio Subscription
Service Overview
Apple launched Creator Studio, a subscription service that bundles several professional creative applications. The service will be available on the App Store starting January 28 with a one-month free trial.
Included Applications
The Creator Studio subscription includes:
- Final Cut Pro (video editing)
- Logic Pro (audio production)
- Pixelmator Pro (image editing)
- Motion (motion graphics)
- Compressor (video encoding)
- MainStage (live music performance)
Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro are accessible on both Mac and iPad. Motion, Compressor, and MainStage are exclusive to Mac. The older Pixelmator app for iPhone and iPad (Pixelmator Classic) will no longer receive updates, with development focusing on Pixelmator Pro.
Productivity App Integration
The subscription unlocks premium features and content within Apple's free productivity apps: Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. These include templates, themes, and access to a Content Hub with Apple-curated assets. Similar paid features are planned for Freeform later in the year.
New Features
Several applications receive new capabilities:
- Final Cut Pro: Beat Detection for music analysis, transcript search, and visual search
- Logic Pro: AI-assisted Session Players and workflow features on Mac and iPad
- Pixelmator Pro: Machine learning features for background removal, image repair, and upscaling (some features require an Apple Intelligence-capable device)
Pricing Structure
Plan Monthly Annual Standard $12.99 $129.00 Student/Educator $2.99 $29.99Standard subscriptions can be shared with up to five additional individuals via Family Sharing. Education subscriptions are for individual use only. Customers purchasing a new qualifying Mac or iPad at launch may receive three free months of Creator Studio.
Standalone Purchase Options
Most major applications remain available for one-time purchase on the Mac App Store:
- Final Cut Pro: $299.99
- Logic Pro: $199.99
- Pixelmator Pro: $49.99
- Motion: $49.99
- Compressor: $49.99
- MainStage: $29.99
On iPad, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro are available exclusively through the Creator Studio subscription with no standalone purchase option. Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform remain free for all users, but premium features require a subscription.
Project Management and Cancellations
Projects created with an active subscription remain licensed to the user. Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro projects remain on devices but require an active subscription for editing or opening. Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform documents remain editable without a subscription, but edits using paid features will be restricted if the subscription ends.
Feature Variations
Feature parity between standalone apps and Creator Studio versions may vary. For example, the Warp Tool in Pixelmator Pro is exclusive to the Creator Studio version.
Background and Market Context
The launch follows rumors of Apple developing its own creative software bundle, particularly after its acquisition of Pixelmator Pro in November 2024. Apple's Creator Studio is priced lower than Adobe's Creative Cloud Pro ($69.99 per month) and individual Adobe apps like Photoshop or Premiere ($22.99 per month). Other companies, including Affinity (now free through Canva after acquisition) and Maxon (offering free individual access to Autograph), have also introduced lower-cost or free alternatives to Adobe software. Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve 21 update added photo editing features. Some commenters noted Apple's Creator Studio lacks a Lightroom alternative.
Studio Display XDR Price Adjustment
Pricing Change
Apple reduced the price of the Studio Display XDR when configured with the VESA mount adapter.
The standard VESA mount version decreased from $3,299 to $2,899, a $400 reduction (approximately 12%).
The nano-texture VESA version also saw its price drop from $3,599 to $3,199. The Studio Display XDR with Apple's tilt-adjustable stand remains priced at $3,299.
Context
At its launch last month, both stand options for the Studio Display XDR were priced identically at $3,299. The VESA mount adapter is a flat metal plate for attaching the display to a monitor arm or wall mount. The price reduction less than a month after launch is uncommon for Apple products. This adjustment aligns the Studio Display XDR pricing with established patterns for most displays, including Apple's Pro Display XDR, where VESA mount options are consistently less expensive than stand versions.
Purchasing Process Update
Apple revised the purchasing flow on Apple.com. Stand choice is now the initial step in the configuration process, preceding glass selection (standard or nano-texture). This change displays the lowest entry-price configuration ($2,899 for VESA mount) first.
Other Studio Display Models
The standard Studio Display (non-XDR) has not received a similar price adjustment. Both its tilt-adjustable stand and VESA mount configurations remain at $1,599. A height-adjustable stand for the base Studio Display is available as a $400 upgrade.
