Apple's OLED Transition Accelerates: New iPad Air, MacBook Pro, and a Surprise MacBook Neo

A series of industry reports and official announcements detail Apple's plans to transition several products to OLED display technology and introduce new hardware across its lineup. According to a report from Korea's ET News citing industry sources, Samsung Display will begin mass production of OLED panels for future iPad Air models around the end of 2026 or January 2027. These panels are intended for a new iPad Air model expected to be released in early 2027.

Apple officially announced and began accepting pre-orders for several new products on March 4, 2026, with general availability starting March 11, 2026.

iPad Air and iPad mini OLED Plans

Production Timeline & Supplier

  • Samsung Display is reported to begin mass production of OLED panels for the next iPad Air around the end of 2026 or January 2027.
  • The new iPad Air model featuring OLED is expected to be released in early 2027.
  • Apple last updated the iPad Air in March 2026, equipping it with an M4 chip, 12GB of RAM, and an LCD "Liquid Retina" display.

Technical Specifications

  • The report indicates the iPad Air is expected to use single-stack low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED panels.
  • This differs from the two-stack low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels used in iPad Pro models.
  • Single-stack LTPS panels may result in lower brightness and are not expected to support ProMotion technology (120Hz refresh rate).
  • Current iPad Air LCD displays are limited to a 60Hz refresh rate and do not support ProMotion.

Related Product Updates

  • Reports suggest the iPad mini 8 will also adopt an OLED display later in 2026, using the same single-stack LTPS panel technology.
  • If both the iPad Air and iPad mini receive OLED displays, the entry-level iPad would be the only model in Apple's tablet lineup without an OLED panel.
  • Apple announced the iPad 11 with an A16 chip in March 2025, starting at $349. The iPad 12 is anticipated to include an A18 or A19 chip and Apple Intelligence support.

OLED panels control each pixel individually, which can result in more precise color reproduction, deeper blacks, superior contrast, faster response times, better viewing angles, and greater design flexibility compared to LCD.

MacBook Pro and MacBook Air OLED Plans

Upcoming MacBook Pro Redesign

  • Multiple reports and analysts indicate that redesigned MacBook Pro models featuring OLED displays, touch screen functionality, and a Dynamic Island are expected to launch in late 2026 or early 2027.
  • These models are expected to be powered by M6 Pro and M6 Max chips built on a 2nm process.
  • The redesign may also incorporate cellular connectivity via a C2 modem.
  • These models may be positioned above the current M5 MacBook Pro models, potentially under a "MacBook Ultra" label, with higher price points.
  • The base M6 MacBook Pro is not expected to include these features initially; the upgrades are projected for the M6 Pro and M6 Max variants.

MacBook Air OLED Timeline

  • Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and other sources forecast that the MacBook Air will receive an OLED display, but not until 2028 or 2029.
  • The delay is attributed to the high cost of large, high-quality OLED panels.
