Incident Details
An Australian national, David Clark, 35, died on January 7 in Southwark, London, after being struck by a Metropolitan Police car.
At approximately 12:30 AM, two Metropolitan Police vehicles were traveling south on Borough High Street, responding to an emergency call with sirens and lights activated. The first police car struck Mr. Clark as it passed through a junction. The UK Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reported that Mr. Clark appeared to be crossing the road at the time of the incident.
Both police drivers stopped at the scene and provided first aid. Mr. Clark was subsequently declared deceased.
Investigation
The IOPC has initiated an independent investigation into the collision. The officers involved in the incident are currently being treated as witnesses.
IOPC director Amanda Rowe stated, "Our deepest sympathies are with Mr Clark's family and friends both in the UK and in Australia, and everyone affected by his death." The IOPC has met with the family, who have requested privacy, and will provide regular updates regarding the investigation.
Victim and Family Support
Mr. Clark resided in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, with his wife and infant child. A GoFundMe fundraiser, established by family friend Teresa Samuels, has raised over £14,700 (approximately $29,000 AUD) to support his family. A message believed to be from Mr. Clark's wife was later posted on the fundraiser page, expressing grief and gratitude for the donations.
