Starlink, a service from SpaceX, has updated its privacy policy to include provisions for using select customer data to train artificial intelligence (AI) models. Subscribers are noted to be opted in by default under this updated policy.
Policy Details
The updated policy indicates that SpaceX may utilize a customer's personal information to "train our machine learning or artificial intelligence models for the purposes outlined in this policy." Additionally, the company may share some customer personal information with third parties "for training artificial intelligence models, including for their own independent purposes."
Starlink has stated that this collaboration with partners could "help us develop AI-enabled tools that improve your customer experience." The company has also clarified that internet history, individual browsing habits, and geolocation tracking will not be shared with AI models, and that it complies with laws against unauthorized surveillance.
The details regarding the nature of the AI training are unspecified. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is also involved with xAI, which develops generative AI technologies like the Grok chatbot. Grok has been integrated into the Starlink app and website for customer support purposes. It is suggested that SpaceX may be using the collected data to enhance Grok’s Starlink integration.
User Concerns and Opt-Out
Some Starlink users have expressed concerns regarding the automatic enrollment in AI training. Users have indicated a preference for an opt-in model or a prompt for consent. Concerns also involve the potential for AI training to involve various companies or services.
To opt out of Starlink's AI data training, users can access their account settings on Starlink.com. The process involves clicking the "edit profile" button and unchecking the box labeled "Share personal data with Starlink's trusted collaborators to train AI models" in the pop-up window. The Starlink app can initiate the opt-out process, but it directs users to the website for finalization.
Data Collection Practices
As an internet service provider, Starlink collects data described as necessary for service provision. This includes personal identifiers such as name, address, email, and payment details collected during sign-up or ordering. Technical information, including IP address and service performance data, is also gathered to maintain connection quality.
The privacy policy, which was previously unchanged since 2023, specifies that information transmitted to and from Starlink equipment is encrypted. Data collection also occurs via cookies and tracking technologies on Starlink.com and within the app. This monitoring can be used for targeted advertising on third-party sites, analyzing service usage, and optimizing the Starlink site and app. Starlink, similar to other ISPs, has also engaged in actions against users suspected of content piracy based on complaints related to IP addresses.
