View source

New Regulations Implemented

The New South Wales (NSW) state government has implemented new gun reforms, effective immediately, despite still being before parliament. These reforms introduce a limit of 10 firearms per individual.

Application Process Changes

  • Prospective firearm owners are now required to apply through a relaunched public online national firearms register, named "Gun Safe."
  • Applications that would result in an individual exceeding the 10-firearm limit will be automatically denied. Police have stated that such applications are "taken to have never been made," and no refund will be issued.
  • The reintroduction of Gun Safe is anticipated to cause extended processing times for Permits to Acquire (PTA). Applicants are advised to submit PTAs only when genuinely necessary, considering the new limits.

Exemptions to the Limit

The 10-firearm limit can be exceeded by individuals who have specific genuine reasons. These reasons include:

  • Primary production
  • Occupational requirements related to rural purposes
  • Animal welfare
  • Sport or target shooting
  • Business or employment
  • Vertebrate pest animal control

Existing Firearm Owners

Police have confirmed that there will be no immediate seizure of firearms from individuals who currently possess more than the new limit. Further information regarding compliance with the new regulations and details of a potential buyback scheme are expected to be provided before the new limits are fully enforced.
