Embark Studios, the developer of Arc Raiders, has addressed the game's late spawn system, stating that data indicates players who join games late "economically profit way more" than those who do not.
Developer's Perspective
Design lead Virgil Watkins acknowledged player frustration regarding late joining, particularly concerning reduced time for objectives and perceived lack of loot. However, Watkins noted that internal data suggests late joiners often benefit. These players may encounter quieter sessions, remnants of previous fights, opportunities to engage larger drones, or access high-value areas more readily, leading to greater economic gain.
The late join system's primary goal is to prevent deserted raids by ensuring continuous player presence. Embark Studios distributes loot to provide sufficient opportunities for all players, including those who join later in a session.
Player Feedback
The late spawn system has generated criticism from some players since the game's release. Concerns include players spawning in close proximity to existing teams late in a raid, often with full gear, creating unfair engagements. Some players suggest a system similar to Escape from Tarkov's Scavs, where only "free loadout" players join late, allowing initial spawns for fully geared players.
Players describe late joining as detrimental for both early and late participants. Late joiners experience limited time and reduced loot, while early players, often low on resources, face fresh, fully geared opponents appearing unexpectedly.
