Ross River Virus has been detected in mosquitoes trapped within the Geelong area, prompting health authorities to advise residents and visitors to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

The Department of Health indicates that mosquitoes in other coastal regions may also be carrying the Ross River Virus.

Chief Health Officer Caroline McElnay outlined several steps individuals can take to avoid mosquito bites. These include wearing long, loose-fitting clothing, using repellent, and minimizing outdoor activity during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Symptoms associated with Ross River Virus may include fever, joint pain and swelling, muscle aches, fatigue, or rash, and can persist for an extended period.

Furthermore, Dr. McElnay urged the public to prepare for a predicted extreme heat event, with temperatures forecasted to reach 40 degrees on Saturday. She emphasized that while anyone can be affected by extreme heat, specific groups face increased risks. These include individuals aged 65 or older, young children, those with acute or chronic medical conditions, and people with limited means to stay cool.

Recommendations for managing extreme heat include staying cool and hydrated, scheduling activities during cooler parts of the day, checking on family, friends, and neighbors, and never leaving children unattended in vehicles.
