Google Unveils Major Gemini AI Update with Personal Intelligence, Memory, and Custom Image Generation

Google has announced a sweeping update for its Gemini AI assistant, including global expansion of "Personal Intelligence," a new "Memory" function, a redesigned interface, and personalized image generation. Feature availability varies by region and subscription tier.

Global Expansion of Personal Intelligence

What It Is

Personal Intelligence is an opt-in feature that allows Gemini to access user data from across Google services to provide personalized responses without requiring specific prompts. It can tap into text, photos, and videos from Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Google Photos, YouTube, Search, Maps, and other Workspace applications.

Users must explicitly opt in and can select which specific applications Gemini can access. Once enabled, Personal Intelligence is active by default for all prompts but can be disabled individually via a toggle in the Tools menu.

Availability by Region

  • Previously launched in: United States
  • Now available in: Most countries worldwide, including India and Japan
  • Not available in: European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom

Availability by Subscription

  • United States: Now broadly available to free personal users of the Gemini app
  • Other global markets: Rolling out first to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, with free users gaining access in the weeks following

Real-World Applications

Google provided these examples of how the feature works:

  • Shopping recommendations based on recent purchases and style preferences
  • Troubleshooting technical issues by referencing purchase receipts
  • Dining suggestions during travel layovers based on food preferences, gate locations, and flight schedules
  • Custom travel itineraries built around individual interests and past favorites
  • New hobby recommendations by analyzing existing interests

Important Limitations

Google cautioned that Gemini may not always correctly interpret context and might make connections between unrelated topics.

The system may struggle with timing or nuance, particularly regarding relationship changes or interpreting user interests based on data patterns. As an example, seeing many photos of a person at a golf course might lead Gemini to assume they love golf, while the actual reason could be entirely different. The company stated users can correct Gemini if it makes incorrect assumptions.

Additional Updates

Memory Feature

Google has widely rolled out a feature previously known as "Past Gemini chats," now rebranded as "Memory." This enables the app to use past conversations to personalize responses, reducing the need for users to repeatedly provide the same information.

Redesigned Gemini Interface

The app's interface has been refreshed with a new glow effect that extends to the entire screen perimeter when activated. The design is predominantly blue, with red, yellow, and green elements concentrated at the bottom.

Gemini Live Integration

Google has updated Gemini Live with memory access, allowing the AI assistant to reference past conversations and information from connected apps. Expanded Connected Apps access enables Gemini Live to use YouTube, Utilities, Workspace, and image generation during conversations. This feature is currently available in English in the United States.

Google Contacts Integration

The Gemini app now integrates with Google Contacts, allowing users to manage contacts and receive personalized responses. Capabilities include:

  • Adding, editing, or deleting contacts
  • Finding contacts by name or number
  • Receiving reminders for saved dates

Personalized Image Generation

How It Works

Google is introducing personalized image generation that integrates Personal Intelligence, Google Photos, and the Nano Banana 2 image generation model. The system uses context from existing Gemini chats and connected Google Photos libraries to generate images reflecting user preferences—without requiring detailed descriptions or manual photo uploads.

When Google Photos is connected, the system can use actual images of people and pets from the user's library to guide image generation, leveraging labels applied in Photos.

Example Usage

  • Users can make requests like: "Create a claymation image of me and my family enjoying our favorite activity"
  • The system automatically fills in contextual details and selects reference photos from the user's library
  • A "Sources" button allows users to view which images the AI referenced
  • Users can refine generated images with follow-up prompts or select new source images using a "+" button

Limitations

Google noted that Gemini might not always select the exact photo or detail a user intends on the first attempt.

Availability

The personalized image generation feature is rolling out to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Google stated the feature will become available in Gemini for Chrome and to additional users at a later date. In a subsequent update, Google announced the feature is now available to all eligible users in the United States for free.

Privacy and Data Usage

Google stated that the Gemini app does not directly train its AI models on users' private Google Photos libraries or Gmail inboxes.

The company stated it trains on limited information, such as specific prompts in Gemini and the model's responses, to improve functionality over time. Users can disable Personal Intelligence and manage connected apps through account settings.

Recent Developments in India

Google has been introducing advanced AI features in India, which it described as one of its biggest markets. In March, Google launched Gemini in Chrome for users in India. The company also enabled an agentic flow for booking restaurants through AI mode in India by partnering with platforms including Zomato, Swiggy, and EazyDiner.

Search AI Mode Integration

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to AI Mode within Google Search. This functionality leverages user data from Google Photos and Workspace to provide tailored responses. The feature is rolling out via Search Labs for personal accounts in the United States subscribed to Google AI Pro or Ultra.
