The principal of New Madinah College in Young, NSW, Sheikh Abdulghani Albaf, will step aside from his role. This decision comes amidst an investigation into accusations of antisemitism against him. The New Madinah College and its principal have been under federal and state government investigation for the past year concerning alleged antisemitic comments made on social media. The NSW Education Authority (NESA) issued a "show cause" notice to the college's board regarding the principal's conduct. A NESA spokesperson confirmed that the initial response from the school did not satisfactorily address the compliance concerns raised by the authority. As a result, the principal will stand aside while the investigation into his conduct is finalized. In January 2025, a government investigation was initiated into comments about Zionism, which attracted accusations of antisemitism, made over several years from an account bearing Sheikh Abdulghani Albaf's name. NESA has been monitoring the school's policies and procedures since the investigation began, conducting an inspection mid-year.NSW Acting Education Minister Courtney Houssos directed NESA to review and strengthen the "fit and proper person" requirements for principals to ensure accountability. NESA's registration committee will review the school's submissions and is expected to make a determination in February regarding the principal's assessment. NESA has stated that student safety and wellbeing remain its highest priority during this process.
