Tram services to Glenelg are scheduled to resume on Australia Day following the completion and successful testing of the Albanese and SA Government’s $870 million Tram Grade Separation Projects. The Glenelg line will recommence operations early Monday morning, with the initial service departing Stop 13 at Glengowrie at 6:09 am. Before full services resume, tram driver training will occur to ensure operators are familiar with the new overpasses, updated signalling, and rebuilt tram stops. Final preparations require a full closure of the tram network today, tomorrow, and Sunday. During this three-day period, substitute bus services will run between Wigley Reserve, the Entertainment Centre, and Botanic Gardens tram stops, with 515 services today, 381 on Saturday, and 185 on Sunday. The return of services signifies the completion of significant upgrades along the Glenelg line, part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects. These works involved the construction of two new overpasses at Morphett Road and Marion and Cross Roads, along with the rebuilding of the South Road Tram Overpass to facilitate the River Torrens to Darlington Project’s open-motorway design. The project eliminated three level crossings, which previously caused boom gates to be down for up to 20 minutes per hour during peak times. This change has improved traffic flow for approximately 50,000 vehicles daily at Marion Road and Cross Road, and around 25,600 vehicles daily at Morphettville Road, aiming to reduce congestion and enhance safety for tram users. The $870 million project was jointly funded by the Albanese and SA Governments and supported over 1,115 full-time jobs during its construction. Emily Bourke stated that the wait for upgraded tram services is nearing its end. Ms. Bourke also acknowledged the scope of work completed within six months, expressing gratitude to those involved in restoring services. She highlighted the removal of three congested tram level crossings, the construction of two new overpasses at Plympton and Morphettville, and the rebuilding of the South Road overpass at Glandore. The resumption of tram services to Glenelg represents a major milestone for Adelaide's public transport network, re-establishing a vital connection between the city and the coast.
