Menswear Runways: Blurring Lines and Shifting Consumer Focus in Paris
Menswear runway shows in Paris have increasingly featured items traditionally associated with womenswear, such as sequined tops, puffy floral capes, and knitted dresses. This trend has ignited discussion regarding the intended customer base for these collections, particularly during men's fashion weeks.
While some celebrities effectively showcase contemporary menswear, certain runway pieces from brands like Feng Chang, Dior, and Prada appear to align more with female or fashion-forward LGBTQ demographics, potentially overlooking the broader male consumer market.
Luxury Market Contraction
The luxury consumer market experienced a contraction, with numbers decreasing from approximately 400 million in 2022 to 340 million in 2025, according to a study by Italian fashion industry group Altagamma.
Designers' Vision: Blending Masculine and Feminine
At Dior, designer Jonathan Anderson presented collections that included womenswear staples like Bar jackets and full skirts, alongside masculine items such as wide-lapel flannel suits, hybrid sailor and cargo jeans, and polo shirts.
Prada also featured distinct menswear pieces, including trench coats with contrasting ponchos, forest green coats, and narrow double-breasted suits. However, the masculine offerings were noted to lack the same level of excitement as the pieces perceived as more female-friendly. Similar observations were made regarding silhouettes and suiting at Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, and Zegna.
Evolving Strategies and Calendar Shifts
In response to evolving market dynamics and creative directions, several luxury labels have adjusted their approach to menswear shows. Alexander McQueen has ceased presenting menswear on runways, while Gucci has integrated menswear and womenswear into combined shows.
The increasing number of brands opting out of dedicated men's fashion week calendars contributed to the cancellation of London Menswear Fashion Week last year.
The Ongoing Discussion
These developments highlight an ongoing discussion within the fashion industry about how to create more diverse and engaging options for men's fashion.
