UGA Prepares for Winter Storm: Important Updates and Safety Information
The University of Georgia (UGA) is monitoring a major winter storm predicted to bring significant ice accumulation, high winds, and rapidly dropping temperatures to the Athens area.
Operational Changes for Monday, January 26
No in-person classes are scheduled for Monday. Faculty are directed to ensure instructional continuity through alternative means such as online lectures, readings, or assignments.
The University anticipates a full campus closure on Monday, which would make online instruction impractical due to potential widespread power outages, ruptured pipes, and hazardous driving conditions.
A final decision on Monday's status will be announced by early Sunday afternoon.
Student Housing and Safety Recommendations
Students are encouraged to return home for the weekend after classes conclude on Friday. Residence halls will remain open for students who choose to stay.
In the event of power outages or water line breaks, University Housing may consolidate remaining students into temporary housing areas with emergency heat and meal services.
On-campus residents should contact their community front desk or RA with concerns and report any facilities-related problems.
Facility Closures and Service Updates
Non-essential facilities, including the Tate Student Center, Ramsey Center for Student Activities, and University Libraries (Main Library, Miller Learning Center, Science Library), will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Campus dining halls and Campus Transit will offer regular weekend service until conditions necessitate changes.
Students, faculty, and staff should check respective websites for updates on dining services (dining.uga.edu), transportation (tps.uga.edu), University Libraries (libs.uga.edu), Tate Student Center (tate.uga.edu), and Ramsey Student Center/Recreational Sports (recsports.uga.edu).
Essential Personnel
If the campus is closed or moves to an alternative learning model, only essential personnel (identified by their department as critical for maintenance, operations, and student support) are expected to report to work, provided travel is safe.
Emergency Communication
The safety of the campus community is the top priority.
Students are advised to verify emergency contact information at ugaalert.uga.edu to receive emergency messages.
Further updates and safety information will be provided via emergency.uga.edu and UGA's social media accounts.
