Gig Buddies is a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to connecting members of the disability community with volunteers. Its core mission is to foster friendships and enable participation in social activities, particularly nightlife, helping individuals enjoy city life beyond support workers' hours.

The program was launched in New South Wales in 2015. It originated from the UK-based charity Stay Up Late and received initial funding from the City of Sydney, with operation handled by ACL Disability Services. Since its inception, more than 100 volunteers have been paired with individuals who have learning disabilities, sharing interests in music, sports, cinema, and food.
Building Genuine Connections: Participant Stories
A Friendship Blooms: Brianna Russell & Lauren Cole
Brianna Russell, a participant in the program, formed a close friendship with volunteer Lauren Cole over three years. Ms. Russell describes Cole as a caring person akin to family, stating her motivation for joining was to expand her social circle.
Ms. Cole became a volunteer after moving from the United States, where she supported her brother with a disability. She reported an immediate connection with Ms. Russell. They share interests in animals and sports, and their relationship is characterized as a genuine friendship rather than a volunteer arrangement.

Ms. Cole emphasized the importance for individuals with disabilities to develop relationships outside their immediate families.
Shared Passions: Lex Tan & PJ Highland
Another participant, artist Lex Tan, bonded with volunteer PJ Highland over shared interests in the arts, entertainment, and the Sydney Swans Football Club. Tan expressed that Gig Buddies provides a safe environment for meeting new people and building connections. Highland, prior to meeting Tan, indicated difficulty finding others who shared his specific interests.
Beyond Support: The Power of Peer Connection
Carol Smail, chief executive of ACL Disability Services and Gig Buddies, highlighted the program's unique offering: the opportunity to connect with someone who shares genuine interests, distinct from paid support.

She emphasized the significant role of peer validation within the project, noting that many participants engage in activities they might not have otherwise experienced.
Looking Ahead: Expansion and Inclusivity
Looking forward, Gig Buddies aims to expand its services to areas like Newcastle and Wollongong due to increasing demand. The organization also plans to continue working with and educating venues to create more inclusive spaces for people with disabilities.
