Sharn Davidson: Embracing Life with Tourette Syndrome

Sharn Davidson lives with Tourette syndrome (TS), a neurological condition characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. Her specific tics involve making two distinct roaring sounds, which she describes as "dinosaur noises." She has affectionately named these tics Kevin and Terry.

The Evolution of Tics: From Childhood to Adulthood

As a child, Ms. Davidson experienced tics approximately once a month. However, a traumatic incident significantly altered this pattern. When she was 21, she witnessed a woman attempt to end her life in her car during an event on a freeway. Following this traumatic experience, her tics increased dramatically.

Her tics increased significantly to over 100 per day.

Diagnosis and Identifying Triggers

After this substantial increase in tics, Ms. Davidson sought medical advice. She received a diagnosis of Tourette syndrome five years later. She has since identified stress as a primary trigger for her tics, noting their frequent occurrence in situations such as classrooms or libraries.

Embracing Her Condition and Educating Others

Ms. Davidson stated she does not take medication for her condition. Instead, she utilizes her tics as a unique tool to educate her students about diversity and embraces them as an integral part of her personality. Her acceptance of her tics is further symbolized by tattoos representing Kevin and Terry.
