Rigathi Gachagua Alleges Assassination Attempt During Church Service

Rigathi Gachagua, a prominent Kenyan opposition figure and former deputy president, has alleged an attempt on his life. The incident reportedly occurred during a church service on Sunday in Othaya, Nyeri County.

The Incident

Several vehicles within the church compound were reportedly damaged. Crucially, no injuries were reported, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

Accusations and Official Reactions

Without providing specific evidence, Gachagua accused President William Ruto, his former political ally, of orchestrating the attack. President Ruto has not yet issued a comment regarding these allegations.

However, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen spoke out against the violence, condemning it as "unacceptable."

Gachagua's Political Background and Future Plans

Gachagua was impeached as deputy president in 2024 and subsequently convicted on five charges, which included inciting ethnic divisions. He stated that he is currently appealing this conviction. Looking ahead, Gachagua has publicly declared his intention to run for president next year.

He and President Ruto were previously elected on a joint ticket in 2022, a campaign that garnered significant support from the Mount Kenya region.
