UK Government Proposes New 'British FBI': The National Police Service

The British government has announced plans to establish a new national police force, colloquially referred to as the “British FBI.” This new entity, officially named the National Police Service, is designed to take charge of complex investigations.

Its remit will cover critical areas such as counterterrorism, fraud, online child abuse, and tackling criminal gangs. The National Police Service will streamline operations by integrating existing agencies focused on terrorism and crime, police air support, road policing, and regional organized crime units across England and Wales.

Alleviating Pressure on Local Forces

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the new body aims to alleviate pressure on the 43 local police forces currently operating in England and Wales. This will allow them to concentrate more effectively on daily criminal activities within their respective areas.

Mahmood indicated that some local forces currently lack the expertise or resources required to address complex modern crimes.

Mahmood further commented that the existing policing model is outdated. The introduction of the new service is expected to attract highly skilled personnel and contribute to cost management through centralized procurement. The complete proposals for this significant change are scheduled for presentation to Parliament.

Anticipated Wider Changes and Reception

Additional anticipated changes include a reduction in the overall number of police forces across England and Wales, alongside modifications to police officer recruitment and management processes.

The concept of these proposed changes has received a positive reception from various police organizations, including London's Metropolitan Police.
