Moama Skate Park Dog Attack Leads to Arrests, Drug & Cash Discovery
A disturbing incident unfolded on a Friday afternoon at the Moama skate park when a large dog reportedly escaped from a parked ute and attacked a three-year-old boy.
Officers from the Murray River Police District and members of the public quickly intervened to separate the child and the animal.
Due to the dog's continued aggressive behavior, a male senior constable discharged a firearm, injuring the animal.
Owner's Actions and Apprehension
Police allege that the 35-year-old owner then took the injured dog and drove away from the scene.
Approximately 90 minutes later, police intercepted and arrested the man on the same street.
Discoveries and Charges Against Man
During the arrest, a significant discovery was made.
Police discovered cannabis and over $92,000 in cash in the man's vehicle.
Checks also indicated his South Australian driver's license had expired 12 years prior.
The man was subsequently charged with nine offenses, including possessing a prohibited drug, supplying a prohibited drug, and recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime. He was remanded and appeared in Albury Local Court, where he was refused bail.
Child's Condition
The three-year-old boy was transported to Echuca Hospital for treatment following the attack. He has since been released.
Subsequent Developments
About an hour after the man's arrest, a 42-year-old woman was located in Moama walking the dog that had been shot.
The dog has since been seized by council rangers.
The woman was issued a court notice for drug possession and is scheduled to appear in April.
Investigation Status
The New South Wales Police investigation into the alleged attack is ongoing.
A NSW spokesperson stated that inquiries would be made, but the incident did not meet the criteria for a critical incident investigation.
