Settlements Reached in Landmark Case
Former Japanese soldier Rina Gonoi has reached settlements with the state and a former colleague, concluding her civil lawsuit. The case involved five former soldiers and the Japanese government, and it has drawn international attention.
Ms. Gonoi will receive 1.6 million yen ($10,400) from the Japanese government. No compensation or apology was provided by the former colleague involved in this final settlement. Ms. Gonoi had previously reached settlements with four of the five ex-soldiers.
Background of the Case
In 2022, Ms. Gonoi posted a video on YouTube detailing allegations of sexual assault while serving in Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF). She alleged that in 2021, three male colleagues pinned her down and sexually assaulted her, and that her complaints to superiors were dismissed.
Her story gained significant attention, leading to a petition signed by over 100,000 people that called for a defense ministry investigation. The investigation subsequently uncovered more than 1,000 other reports of sexual harassment within the SDF.
In a separate criminal case in 2023, three of Ms. Gonoi's attackers were convicted of sexual assault. They received two-year prison sentences, which were suspended for four years.
Broader Impact
Ms. Gonoi's case is considered a landmark in Japan, a country where victims of sexual violence have historically been reluctant to come forward. Her public account has contributed to increased public discussion regarding sexual violence, following other notable cases such as journalist Shiori Ito's legal battle and the Johnny Kitagawa expose.
Ms. Gonoi stated on Monday that the period since speaking out four and a half years ago has been "very long and heavy," but she does not regret her decision.
She had initially sought 5.5 million yen in damages from the men and an additional 2 million yen from the state for its failure to prevent abuse.
