Angels Ink Reliever Nick Sandlin to Minor League Deal
The Angels have reached an agreement with reliever Nick Sandlin on a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to major league spring training.
Sandlin, 29, has played in four major league seasons, primarily for the Guardians. He was traded to Toronto as part of a previous offseason transaction.
Previous Stint and Injury Woes
For the Jays, Sandlin pitched 16 1/3 innings. His time with the team was significantly impacted by injuries, specifically a lat strain and elbow inflammation, which led to extended periods on the injured list. Following these issues, Toronto subsequently designated him for assignment.
Performance Profile
Before his time with the Jays, Sandlin was a member of the Cleveland bullpen. From 2021 to 2024, he recorded 195 1/3 innings with a 3.27 earned run average.
Sandlin demonstrated a strong 27.7% strikeout rate and an impressive 43.6% ground-ball rate during this period.
While his walk rate was noted as being above league average, his ability to generate strikeouts and ground balls were considered significant strengths.
Velocity and Advanced Metrics
Last year, Sandlin's average four-seamer velocity was 91.4 mph, and his sinker averaged 91.8 mph. Both velocities represented career lows, potentially affected by his arm injuries throughout the season. In 2025, he demonstrated a 14.8% swinging-strike rate.
Service Time and Team Control Implications
Sandlin currently has 4.157 years of major league service time.
If he spends just 15 days on the Angels' major league roster or injured list, he will reach five years of service. This milestone is significant as it would provide the Angels control over him for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, assuming he is not non-tendered in the future.
Bullpen Outlook and Competition
Potential opportunities exist in the Anaheim bullpen, which has several spots open for competition.
Key relievers expected to have roster spots include Robert Stephenson, Kirby Yates, Drew Pomeranz, and Jordan Romano, as well as Chase Silseth. This leaves additional positions open for competition. Sandlin will vie for these spots alongside other veteran non-roster invitees such as Miguel Castro, Angel Perdomo, and Tayler Saucedo.
