NSW Liberals Announce New Men's Health Role
NSW Liberal leader Kellie Sloane has announced the establishment of a new parliamentary secretary position focused on men's health. Davidson MP Matt Cross, a bowel cancer survivor, has been appointed to this pivotal role.
Cross will effectively act as a shadow minister, aiming to improve physical and mental health outcomes for boys and men in New South Wales. While significant, it is not a full shadow cabinet portfolio.
Rationale Behind the Initiative
Sloane stated the initiative's purpose is to "do better" for the four million boys and men in NSW. She identified a notable disparity in health outcomes between men and women, highlighting several key areas:
- Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women.
- Men die four years earlier than women from avoidable causes.
- Men are more prone to cardiovascular disease and avoidable cancers.
- Men tend to visit doctors less frequently than women.
Sloane also advocated for a shift in the public discourse surrounding men, suggesting that masculinity should be "celebrated" rather than being described as "broken" or "toxic."
"Let's turn that around and let's say you are supported, you are loved, and your masculinity should be celebrated."
She expressed a commitment to addressing men's health seriously at the state level, acknowledging the existing federal special envoy for men's health.
Matt Cross's Personal Connection
Matt Cross indicated that his new position holds deep personal significance, stemming from his experience as a cancer survivor and the recent birth of his son. He aims to "make it easier for men to look after themselves" to save lives, support families, and ensure men and boys in NSW have the opportunity for longer, healthier lives.
Further Shadow Parliamentary Secretary Appointments
The NSW Liberals also announced other new shadow parliamentary secretary appointments:
- Jordan Lane for home ownership and rental affordability.
- Michael Kemp for the prevention of regional crime.
The new opposition ministry now includes 10 women and 16 men.
