Theft of Valuables in Kew, Melbourne
An art collection and other valuable property, estimated to be worth more than $400,000, have been stolen from a residence in Kew, Melbourne. The theft was discovered on December 28 when the homeowner's brother, Stephen, found the front door removed and the home ransacked.
Incident Details
It is believed that unknown offenders accessed the property multiple times over an extended period. The homeowner had been living elsewhere for over a year due to long-term medical treatment. Police estimate the period during which the ransacking may have occurred spans from December 2024 to December 2025.
Stolen Items
The stolen items comprise a significant collection accumulated over decades. Key items reported missing include:
- A John Perceval "Sunflowers" painting, valued over $75,000.
- Three Cris Canning paintings, each valued between $30,000 and $50,000.
- Two antique Chinese paintings, each valued over $10,000.
- A pearl strand valued over $50,000.
- Various family heirlooms and a substantial wine collection.
- Household items such as vacuum cleaners, tools, watches, and cameras.
The total value of the stolen property is expected to be considerably higher than the initial $400,000 estimate, as several items' values are yet to be fully assessed. None of the stolen items were insured.
Police Investigation and Appeal
Detective Sergeant Warren Atkinson stated that police believe the offenders may have initially burgled the address, then returned multiple times after determining it was unoccupied. This has complicated the investigation.
Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Individuals who observed suspicious activity in the Kew area or recognize any of the stolen items are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
