Enforcement Strategy and Monitoring
Deputy Commissioner Bob Hill stated that Victoria Police would maintain their efforts against youth gangs. The strategy includes proactive weapon seizures and the potential expansion of unlawful association notices for gang members aged 18 and older, aimed at deterring involvement in organized crime.
As of New Year's Day, 608 gang members across 34 distinct groups were under active police monitoring.
Investigations into youth gang stabbings, which numbered 48 in Victoria last year, resulted in arrests within an average of 17 days. Police are also focusing on firearm offenses, with 69 youth gang members charged last year. Currently, 70 individuals linked to youth gangs are subject to firearm prohibition orders (FPOs), including 18 members from one gang connected to multiple killings.
Deputy Commissioner Hill confirmed that this proactive approach results in daily arrests and charges for serious offenses, ensuring those responsible for violence are swiftly identified and brought to justice.
