Alice Springs Redevelopment Initiatives

Alice Springs is poised for significant urban redevelopment across several key areas over the next few years, involving both public and private sector projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure and community facilities.

Public Sector Projects

The Alice Springs Town Council is spearheading renewal projects for the Todd Mall, the public library, the visitor information centre, Leichhardt Terrace, and the area connecting Parsons Street to the Hartley Street car park. Concurrently, the Northern Territory government has announced plans for a new multi-sport precinct in Gillen.

Todd Mall Redevelopment

The Todd Mall redevelopment, budgeted at $20 million, will see a significant overhaul. Changes include replacing existing red bricks with crisp white pavers, planting 20 new trees after the removal of 12, and installing a modern digital display board. Further enhancements will feature a 10-meter sculpture, new seating, improved lighting, bubblers, bins, bike racks, and updated toilet facilities. Gum tree-shaped arbours are also planned to provide much-needed shade.

This ambitious project is projected for completion by the end of 2026.

New Library and Visitor Centre

A new $20 million library is set to be jointly funded by the Alice Springs Town Council and the Northern Territory government. This state-of-the-art facility will be located at the Civic Centre site, positioned above the council car park. The design prioritizes modern accessibility and technology standards, offering more seating, dedicated study zones, collaborative spaces, and larger areas specifically for children's programs.

Upon the new library's completion, Tourism Central Australia's visitor information centre will relocate from its current Todd Mall premises to occupy the vacated library building.

Private Sector Projects

Private stakeholders are also driving significant developments, including a major upgrade to a key shopping destination in the town center.

Yeperenye Shopping Centre Makeover

The Yeperenye Shopping Centre is undergoing a substantial $27 million redevelopment. This expansion will introduce a new four-level car park, providing over 200 additional bays, alongside a new loading dock and convenient click-and-collect facilities for shoppers. The project also includes the addition of new office spaces and a vibrant rooftop bar and restaurant.

Completion of the Yeperenye Shopping Centre redevelopment is expected by September 2027.

Woolworths is scheduled to move from Yeperenye Shopping Centre to Alice Plaza in February 2028, coinciding with the expiration of its current lease. Discussions are actively in progress with other supermarket chains, such as Foodland, to occupy the significant space that will be vacated. Meanwhile, retailer Aldi has indicated it will not operate in the Northern Territory due to logistical challenges related to its distribution centers.
