Tens of thousands of workers, predominantly Chinese, were recruited under false pretenses of well-paid employment.

Upon arrival, these individuals were reportedly confined within compounds. They were compelled to operate sophisticated online scams, referred to as 'pig-butchering' scams, which primarily targeted other Chinese individuals.

Reports from victims and the families of those confined in these compounds increased on social media platforms.
