National Cabinet Targets NDIS Sustainability and Aged Care Transition
Australia's national cabinet has committed to significant initiatives aimed at improving the sustainability of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). These efforts also focus on facilitating the smoother transition of elderly hospital patients into appropriate aged care facilities.
Prime Minister Albanese underscored the urgency of the situation, stating:
"Getting older, longer stay patients out of hospital rooms and into dedicated care" is a priority, with aged care reforms expected to support this critical effort.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns elaborated on the agreement's potential impact. He indicated that the new commitments would significantly contribute to resolving the persistent aged care challenges – an issue states have consistently raised with the federal government during negotiations. Premier Minns emphasized that these challenges are long-standing and extend beyond mere funding. He highlighted that both federal and state leaders confront the issue of an aging population, suggesting that current system strains could intensify in the future.
