Fatal Shooting in Mistissini Prompts Community Lockdown
Two individuals have died following a shooting incident in Mistissini, a Cree First Nation community situated in northern Quebec, Canada.
Authorities stated that the situation is not considered an active shooter event.
Hugues Beaulieu, a spokesperson for Quebec's provincial police, the Sureté du Québec, confirmed that two men in their 30s, both residents of Mistissini, were found fatally shot inside a car during the night.
Investigation Underway
While no arrests have been made, Beaulieu informed ABC News that police do not believe there is an active threat to the general population.
Police are investigating a theory that the deaths are linked to organized crime and the drug trade.
Community Responds
In response to the incident, community chief Michael Petawabano announced the closure of all schools and community buildings. Residents of Mistissini, which has a population of approximately 4,000, have been advised to remain in their homes.
In a public statement, Chief Petawabano urged community members to remain calm, stay indoors, and cooperate fully with the police investigation.
The community lockdown will continue until law enforcement confirms it is safe to resume normal activities.
