Andre McKechnie, an individual serving a life sentence in Australia for murder, is currently challenging a prohibition on Vegemite consumption for prisoners.
State authorities in Victoria have stated that the strong-smelling condiment could potentially be used by inmates to conceal illicit substances or to produce alcohol within correctional facilities.
McKechnie argues that the ban, which has been in effect in the state of Victoria since 2006, denies him the right to "enjoy his culture as an Australian," according to court documents.
McKechnie received a life sentence following the fatal stabbing of a property developer in Queensland in the 1990s. He began serving his sentence in Queensland before being transferred to Victoria.
