Darwin Salties Withdrawn from NWBL; Co-Captains Express Disappointment
Australia's leading wheelchair basketball team, the Darwin Salties, has been withdrawn from the upcoming National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) season. Co-captains Tom O'Neill-Thorne and CJ McCarthy-Grogan stated that players were informed of the decision, made by Basketball NT (BNT), via media reports rather than direct communication.
"BNT provided no explanation for the withdrawal and no prior consultation with the team."
The co-captains reported this lack of explanation and consultation as a key concern.
Team's Success and Future Concerns
The Salties joined the NWBL in 2022 and have since won three consecutive championships. Players from the team have represented Australia in international competitions, including the 2023 World Championships and 2024 Paris Paralympics.
McCarthy-Grogan requested transparency from BNT regarding the decision-making process. He also voiced concerns about the implications for disability representation and opportunities in the Northern Territory, particularly in the lead-up to Australia hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Basketball NT Explains Withdrawal
In response, BNT acknowledged the basketball community's disappointment. BNT explained that the Darwin Basketball Association (DBA), which previously managed the NWBL license, entered administration in December 2025.
Following this development, BNT was asked to take on responsibility for fielding a new Darwin team for the 2026 season.
"The BNT board determined it could not undertake the financial and operational risks of a national league team without secure ongoing funding."
Consequently, BNT is now prioritizing the establishment of a new local Darwin competition and rebuilding the financial stability of basketball within the territory.
League Confirms Missed Deadlines
John Palmer, executive general manager of Wheelchair Basketball Australia (WBA), confirmed that BNT did not meet the extended deadlines for the license. WBA was notified of the withdrawal after a BNT board meeting.
"Palmer noted the difficulty of the decision from a financial prudence perspective."
He also stated that while the Darwin Salties will no longer participate in 2026, the league remains dedicated to supporting the growth of para-sport in the region, recognizing the team's excellence and impact.
