Teen Dies in Shark Attack Off Brazil Coast

A 13-year-old boy died on Thursday after being attacked by a shark off Chifre beach in Pernambuco, a tourist region on Brazil's eastern coast. The State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT) confirmed the incident.

Incident Details and Medical Efforts

The boy, identified as Deivson Rocha Dantas, sustained injuries to his right thigh. He was transported to a hospital but did not survive. Dr. Levy Dalton, who treated the victim, reported that resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Chifre beach had four shark warning signs posted by authorities. Following the fatality, CEMIT stated it would enhance shark monitoring and reinstate a suspended program for tracking the creatures with microchips.

Records from CEMIT indicate that over 80 shark attacks have occurred in Pernambuco since 1992, with 26 of these incidents being fatal prior to this event.
