The Super Bowl is approaching its 60th anniversary. Out of 32 NFL teams, 12 have not won a Super Bowl championship. Seven teams (Patriots, Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, Giants, Packers, and Chiefs) have won 34 of the 59 championships in the Super Bowl era, accounting for 57.6% of the titles. Among the 12 teams without a Super Bowl win, the Browns, Texans, Lions, and Jaguars have never played in a Super Bowl.
Arizona CardinalsThe Cardinals franchise, established in 1920, has a winning percentage of .421, with 11 playoff appearances and seven postseason wins. They won a disputed championship in 1925 and a clear title in 1947.
Atlanta FalconsTheir sole Super Bowl appearance was in XLIII in 2008, where they lost to the Steelers in the final seconds.
An expansion team from 1966, the Falcons made their first playoff appearance in 1978. They reached the Super Bowl in 1998, losing to the Broncos.
In 2016, Atlanta again reached the Super Bowl, losing to the Patriots after holding a 28–3 lead.
The Falcons have made the NFC title game on two other occasions.
Buffalo BillsThe Bills won the 1964 and 1965 American Football League championships.
They are the only team to appear in four consecutive Super Bowls, from 1990 to 1993, losing all four times to the Cowboys (twice), Giants, and Washington.
The Bills reached the AFC championship game in 2020 and 2024, losing to the Chiefs each time.
Carolina PanthersEstablished in 1995, the Panthers advanced to the NFC championship game in 1996, losing to the Packers.
Their first Super Bowl appearance was in 2003, a 32–29 loss to the Patriots due to a last-second field goal.
In 2015, the Panthers had a 15-win season, defeating the Seahawks and Cardinals to reach Super Bowl 50 as favorites but lost 24–10 to the Broncos.
Cincinnati BengalsCincinnati has made multiple Super Bowl appearances. In 1981, they lost to Joe Montana and the 49ers. In 1988, they again lost to Montana and the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
Cleveland BrownsAfter a 30-year playoff drought, the Bengals returned to the Super Bowl in the 2021 season (LVI), where they lost to the Rams.
Formed in 1946 in the AAFC, the Browns won all four of that league's titles before joining the NFL in 1950. They then reached six consecutive NFL title games, winning three.
After another championship in 1964, the Browns have had limited success.
In the 1980s, they reached the AFC title game three times, losing each to the Broncos. Since the 1989 season, the Browns have not won a division title or advanced past the divisional round.
Detroit LionsThe Lions were a successful team in the 1950s, winning three championships in 1952, 1953, and 1957. After 1957, the team did not secure a playoff victory until 1991, followed by another 32-year period without one.
Houston TexansRecently, Detroit reached the NFC championship game in the 2023 season, losing to the 49ers after holding a significant lead, making them the only NFC team without a Super Bowl appearance.
Joining the league in 2002, the Texans have played 24 NFL seasons. They have made the postseason nine times but have not reached the AFC title game. They have advanced to the divisional round in four of the past seven seasons, including the last three.
Jacksonville JaguarsHouston is the only team to have never played on Championship Sunday.
An expansion team in 1995, the Jaguars reached their conference title game in 1996, losing to the Patriots. Three years later, in 1999, they returned to that stage as a 14–2 team but lost to the Titans.
Los Angeles ChargersSince the 1999 campaign, Jacksonville has only returned to the AFC title game once, in 2018, where they lost 24–20 to New England.
The Chargers won an AFL championship in 1963. Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, they have reached the AFC title game four times, winning one.
Their sole AFC championship came in 1994, defeating the Steelers.
In Super Bowl XXIX, San Diego faced a strong 49ers team and lost 49–26, with Steve Young throwing six touchdowns.
Minnesota VikingsJoining the NFL in 1961, Minnesota reached four Super Bowls over seven years, starting in 1969.
They lost Super Bowl IV to the Chiefs and subsequently fell to the Dolphins, Steelers, and Raiders in 1973, 1974, and 1976 seasons.
In 1987, they reached the NFC title game but lost. They lost in the same round in 1998 as a 15–1 team. Since then, the Vikings have lost three more NFC title games and have not returned to the Super Bowl.
Tennessee TitansOriginally the Houston Oilers in the AFL, they won the first two league titles in 1960 and 1961. In the NFL, Houston reached the AFC title game in 1978 and 1979, losing both times to the Steelers.
In 1999, the relocated Titans reached the Super Bowl but lost 23–16 to the Rams, with a receiver tackled at the 1-yard line as time expired.
Tennessee also reached the AFC championship game in 2019, losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
