Greg Shipperd Removed From Cricket NSW and Sydney Sixers Roles
Greg Shipperd has been removed from his coaching roles with Cricket NSW and the Sydney Sixers, effective immediately.
Tenure with Sydney Sixers and NSW Blues
Shipperd coached the Sydney Sixers for an impressive 11 seasons. During his tenure, the team secured two Big Bash League (BBL) titles and only missed the finals twice. Most recently, the Sixers reached the BBL final in early January.
He also served as the head coach for the NSW men's team, taking charge in November 2022. The NSW Blues currently remain in contention for both the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup finals.
Shipperd Expresses Disappointment
Shipperd issued a statement expressing his disappointment regarding the decision. His contract was reportedly set to conclude at the end of the 2026/27 season.
Shipperd stated that he would not have the opportunity to continue developing young players, a key aspect of his coaching philosophy.
Cricket NSW Explains Change in Direction
Cricket NSW boss Lee Germon confirmed the organization's decision. He indicated that a change in direction was sought to provide both the Blues and Sixers with the best chance to win titles.
Germon affirmed the decision, stating a change was needed "to provide the Blues and Sixers with the best chance to win titles."
The organization will now commence a search for new coaches. A decision is pending on whether the head coaching positions for the NSW Blues and Sydney Sixers will be held by one person or kept separate.
A Storied Coaching Career
Shipperd's extensive coaching career includes a rich history across Australian cricket. He began with Tasmania in 1991, followed by over a decade with Victoria. He also served as the foundation coach of the Melbourne Stars in the BBL before joining the Sydney Sixers in 2015.
