Trump Outlines Federal Response to City Protests: No Aid Unless Requested, Federal Property Forcefully Protected
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the federal government will not assist cities experiencing ongoing anti-immigration enforcement demonstrations or riots unless federal help is specifically requested. He stated he has instructed ICE and Border Patrol to be “very forceful” in protecting federal property.
Federal Aid Contingent on Request
In a Truth Social post, Trump detailed his directive to Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem.
“I have instructed Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, that under no circumstances are we going to participate in various poorly run Democrat Cities with regard to their Protests and/or Riots unless, and until, they ask us for help.”
Trump indicated that this statement serves as a notice to local governments that they are responsible for protecting their state and local property. He clarified that if local governments are unable to manage such situations, federal assistance would be provided upon request. He specified that local governments, governors, and mayors should use the word “PLEASE” when requesting federal assistance.
Forceful Protection of Federal Property
While federal assistance for local issues is conditional, Trump emphasized an unwavering stance on federal property protection.
The federal government will, however, “guard, and very powerfully so, any and all Federal Buildings that are being attacked.”
Trump further wrote, “Please be aware that I have instructed ICE and/or Border Patrol to be very forceful in this protection of Federal Government Property.” He added that there would be consequences for actions such as spitting on officers, damaging vehicles, or throwing objects at vehicles or personnel. It was not specified if “equal, or more, consequence” referred to criminal charges.
Local Responsibility and Precedent
Trump highlighted that local governments are also obligated to protect federal property, including buildings and parks. He cited an incident in Eugene, Oregon, where individuals reportedly broke into a federal building and caused damage, stating, “Local Police did nothing in order to stop it. We will not let that happen anymore!”
He referenced the Los Angeles Riots one year prior, where federal help was provided, as an example of assistance upon request.
Policy Reinforcement
Trump concluded by reiterating that ICE, Border Patrol, or the military, if necessary, would be powerful and tough in protecting federal property. He emphasized his administration's policy on border control, national security, and law and order.
