Tragedy Across Borders: Four Children Die in Two Separate House Fires
Two unrelated house fires in New South Wales and Queensland, occurring within 24 hours, have claimed the lives of four children. Authorities have stated neither fire is being treated as suspicious.
Bowen Mountain, New South Wales Fire
Incident
Emergency services were called to a home on Lieutenant Bowen Road in Bowen Mountain, a locality in the Hawkesbury region, at approximately 2:00 AM on Monday. Fire crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW arrived to find the two-storey property fully engulfed in flames.
The roof and internal structures had collapsed during the blaze. Approximately 50 to 60 firefighters responded to the incident. The fire was brought under control by approximately 3:30 AM to 4:00 AM. Neighbouring homes were not damaged.
Casualties and Fatalities
Two children were found deceased inside the home after firefighters were able to gain safe access. The deceased were identified as ten-year-old Myla Summer-Lea Hughes and three-year-old River William Higgins. One child was found on the ground floor and the other on the upper floor.
Five other occupants escaped the fire: a man in his 30s, a teenage male, and two primary school-aged boys, who were taken to Nepean Hospital. They were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries and were reported to be in stable condition. The children's mother was not at the residence at the time of the fire, having already traveled to Queensland. According to statements from the parents, the family had been planning to relocate to Queensland.
Response and Investigation
Police have established a crime scene at the property. The roof collapse initially hindered safe access for search and rescue efforts, and firefighters conducted an external fire attack due to the risk of wall collapse. Fire investigators are using drones and a canine detection dog in their investigation. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and police stated the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
Statements
Commissioner Trent Curtin of the NSW Rural Fire Service stated that firefighters assessed the situation as too dangerous to enter while the home was fully engulfed and collapsing.
Superintendent Jonathon Hill of the RFS described the morning as difficult. Assistant Commissioner Andrew Faunce of Fire and Rescue NSW noted that modern homes can become rapidly fully involved in fire. Superintendent Nadine Roberts of the Hawkesbury Police called the situation "incredibly confronting" for the community and first responders.
Parents Skye Hughes and David Higgins issued a statement describing the event as a tragedy that has changed their family and thanking first responders, hospital staff, family, friends, and the Hawkesbury community for their support.
Bushland Beach, Queensland Fire
Incident
Emergency services responded to a house fire at Gum Court in Bushland Beach, a suburb of Townsville, at approximately 5:30 AM on Sunday. Queensland Fire Department crews arrived to find the bottom floor of the two-storey residence on fire. Crews used a ladder to access the roof to remove casualties. The fire was contained by firefighters.
Casualties and Fatalities
Two girls, aged two and 13, were rescued from the residence. They were transported to Townsville University Hospital in critical condition with severe breathing issues. On Thursday, Queensland Police confirmed that both girls had died from their injuries. They were later identified as sisters Hallie and Evie.
Two teenage boys who were also in the house escaped and were hospitalized in stable condition with smoke inhalation injuries. Two police officers who rescued one of the children were treated for smoke inhalation as a precautionary measure.
Response and Investigation
Upon arrival, police had already rescued one individual and were administering CPR. Firefighters subsequently extracted a second person and provided CPR. Paramedics provided treatment for significant smoke exposure. The Townsville Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) is conducting an investigation. A crime scene has been declared. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and authorities are treating the incident as non-suspicious. Police have requested that anyone with information contact them.
Fundraising
A fundraiser initiated to support the family has raised over A$85,000.
