Florida Experiences Record Cold and Snow Flurries

A significant cold air mass, originating from a departing bomb cyclone, has moved across Florida, leading to snow flurries in the Tampa Bay area and establishing new cold records across the state.

Snow Falls in Tampa Bay

Reports of snow flurries in Tampa began on the evening of January 31, 2026, and continued into the morning of February 1, 2026. This was confirmed by the National Weather Service. The flakes developed as cold winds collected moisture from the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Widespread Impacts and Power Outages

The severe cold front has resulted in power outages for nearly 20,000 homes and businesses statewide.

Temperatures plummeted, dropping to the low 20s in northern Florida and the mid-30s in South Florida.

New Cold Records Shatter Across Florida

Several locations have reported all-time coldest February low temperatures.

Daytona Beach recorded 23 degrees Fahrenheit, Melbourne 25 degrees Fahrenheit, and Vero Beach 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Miami experienced a daily record low of 35 degrees Fahrenheit, marking its coldest morning since 2010.

Community Responds to Aid Vulnerable

In anticipation of the cold weather, Darlyne Jean-Charles of Florida Power and Light and Ron Book, chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, distributed cold weather supplies to unhoused individuals in Miami.
