Diamondbacks Exploring First Base Options, Carlos Santana Among Targets
The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly exploring options for first base, with veteran Carlos Santana emerging as a potential candidate. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com initially reported the club's interest, a sentiment echoed by John Gambadoro of 98.7FM Arizona Sports, who confirmed Santana is one of several first basemen under consideration.
Santana is one of several first basemen being considered, and no deal is imminent.
Santana's Appeal and 2024 Season
Santana, a veteran of 16 MLB seasons, brings significant experience. His clubhouse leadership is an additional appeal for the Diamondbacks, according to Gambadoro. He is also highly regarded for his defensive prowess.
He is recognized as a strong defensive first baseman, having won his first career Gold Glove in 2024.
In the 2024 season, while playing for the Twins, Santana posted a batting line of .238/.328/.420 with 23 home runs over 594 plate appearances, resulting in a respectable 113 wRC+.
A Decline in 2025 Performance
However, Santana's performance saw a noticeable decline in 2025. Across 474 plate appearances with both the Guardians and Cubs, he recorded an 82 wRC+. His one-year, $12 million contract with Cleveland concluded with his release in late August. Subsequently, the Cubs signed Santana for bench depth, but he managed only two hits in 19 plate appearances and was not included on their postseason roster.
For the entire 2025 season, Santana's batting line was .219/.308/.325, with both his on-base and slugging percentages marking career lows. While his 11% walk rate remained consistent and he maintained an above-average strikeout avoidance rate, his power output decreased significantly in his age-39 season.
Platoon Potential and Defensive Value
Santana, a switch-hitter, experienced a notable drop in production against left-handed pitching in 2025. This factor is particularly relevant for the Diamondbacks, as left-handed hitter Pavin Smith would likely serve as his platoon partner in Arizona. Such an arrangement would primarily position Santana to face southpaws, potentially leveraging his historical better performance from the right side of the plate.
As he approaches his age-40 season, the Diamondbacks are the first team publicly linked to Santana this offseason.
His strong defensive capabilities are considered an advantage over other available first basemen, particularly for a team like Arizona that may require a part-time first base option.
