Specialist police in Colombia are undertaking critical missions aimed at dismantling crude cocaine labs hidden deep within the country's dense jungle. These facilities are typically basic structures, equipped with chemical drums and fresh coca leaves, used for the production of cocaine paste.
The elite police unit spearheading these efforts, known as the Jungle Commandos, benefits from international support. They receive essential equipment from the United States and initially underwent specialized training from Britain's SAS.
The Rapid Challenge of Reconstruction
Despite the ongoing operations, the task of permanently disrupting drug production faces a significant hurdle: the speed with which labs can be re-established. Major Cristhian Cedano DÃaz, a seasoned veteran with 16 years of experience in anti-drug operations, highlighted this challenge.
