OWGR Awards World Ranking Points to LIV Golf, With Top 10 Restriction
The Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) board has announced a decision to award world ranking points to players participating in LIV Golf events. This marks the first time LIV Golf players will receive such points, effective from the current season.
Key Details of the OWGR Ruling
- Points will only be awarded to the top 10 finishers at LIV Golf events.
- This restriction differs from the 24 other men's professional golf tours recognized by OWGR, where all players who make the cut typically earn points.
LIV Golf's Reaction
LIV Golf acknowledged the decision as a "long-overdue moment of recognition." However, the organization criticized the limitation on points, labeling the outcome as "unprecedented."
"No other competitive tour or league in OWGR history has been subjected to such a restriction."
LIV Golf asserted that restricting points to only the top 10 finishers negatively impacts players who perform consistently at a high level but finish outside this threshold.
OWGR's Justification
The OWGR board explained that awarding points to LIV Golf reflects an effort to adapt to "the changing landscape of the men's professional game." The board also stated that the restriction to the top 10 finishers was implemented because LIV Golf "recognises there are a number of areas where LIV Golf does not meet the eligibility standards set out by OWGR."
The fifth season of the LIV Golf circuit is set to commence this week in Riyadh.
