SSPDF Captures Motot Town in Jonglei State
The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has announced the capture of Motot town in Uror County, Jonglei State. The military operation targeted the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) and allied fighters.
Major General Lul Ruai Koang, an army spokesperson, stated that government troops had taken full control of the town following an engagement with opposition forces.
Operation Details
The SSPDF leadership, under Chief of Defence Forces Paul Nang Majok, confirmed the capture. During the battle, the army reported that five opposition fighters were killed.
SSPDF forces also stated they recovered various weapons, including four RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, a significant cache of ammunition, two 60mm mortars, and one G-3 rifle along with several shells. Military officials described the seizure as having a substantial impact on the operational capacity of armed groups in the area.
Background and Impact
Motot, located in a remote and conflict-prone part of Uror County, has been a frequently contested area between government forces and armed opposition groups. The region has historically experienced recurring clashes, which have often resulted in civilian displacement and disruption of humanitarian access.
Reports indicate that renewed military activities in recent weeks have heightened tensions, leading to reports of families evacuating nearby villages. The extent of civilian impact or infrastructure damage from the latest operation remains unconfirmed.
Current Status
The SSPDF stated it is consolidating its control over Motot and its surrounding areas to prevent further movements by opposition forces.
As of the time of reporting, the SPLA-IO had not issued an official response to the SSPDF's claims regarding the town's capture. This event occurs amidst ongoing security challenges in parts of Jonglei State, where sporadic clashes persist between various armed groups.
