Managerial Shake-Up at Everton Women
Everton's women's team manager, Brian Sørensen, has been dismissed from his role. The club announced the decision following their first home victory of the season, which moved them four points clear of the Women's Super League relegation zone. Sørensen, 45, had been in charge since 2022.
Chief Executive Angus Kinnear stated that a "change of direction is necessary to ensure the progression on the pitch we are all striving for."
Assistant coaches Stephen Neligan and Ashley Tootle have also departed the club.
Performance Overview and Interim Leadership
Under Sørensen's leadership, Everton finished sixth in the 2022-23 season, followed by back-to-back eighth-placed finishes. This season, the team is currently ninth in the Women's Super League.
Everton’s Under-18s coach, Scott Phelan, will assume interim charge for the remainder of the season. He will be assisted by Jennifer Foster and goalkeeping coach Ian McCaldon. Phelan's first match as interim manager will be against London City Lionesses on Sunday, followed by a home game against West Ham.
Sørensen's Background and Recent Challenges
Sørensen joined Everton before the 2022-23 campaign, having previously led Fortuna Hjørring to Women’s Champions League qualification and won a Danish Cup with Nordsjælland. He succeeded Jean-Luc Vasseur and oversaw a period of relative stability for the team. However, the club recorded six consecutive home league defeats this season after Goodison Park became the women's team's permanent home.
