Moulin Rouge! The Musical to Conclude Broadway Run
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set to conclude its Broadway run on July 26 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, after nearly seven years.
By its final performance, the production will have achieved 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews, securing its place as the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history.
Broadway Legacy & Closure Details
Producers have not provided a specific reason for the closure. The musical is recognized for its substantial production costs, largely attributed to music rights and its elaborate set design, despite consistently performing to high attendance levels.
The show is an adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film “Moulin Rouge,” incorporating popular songs by various artists to narrate a story centered on bohemians in Paris's Montmartre neighborhood.
Genesis, Pandemic, and Critical Acclaim
The musical premiered on July 25, 2019, to favorable reviews. After an initial nine months of strong ticket sales, the production, along with the broader theater industry, paused due to the pandemic. It reopened in September 2021 and subsequently received 10 Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical.
Additional Tonys were awarded to director Alex Timbers, book writer John Logan, and choreographer Sonya Tayeh.
Financial Success & Global Reach
“Moulin Rouge!” recouped its investment by late 2022, distinguishing it as the only musical from the 2019-2020 Broadway season to do so. The production also expanded internationally, with 15 worldwide stagings, including a North American tour and runs in London’s West End, Germany, and Korea.
Producer's Reflection
Producer Carmen Pavlovic commented on the honor of bringing the show to Broadway, acknowledging Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin for their trust and creative input.
"Pavlovic also highlighted Alex Timbers' vision and the creative team's artistic contributions."
Producers have stated that further announcements are anticipated before the show's final performance.
